At the Edge of the Abyss
When all around is darkness vast.
I search for light, but find no way—
The abyss calls me every day.
Death reaches out with shadowed hands,
I’m trapped in nightmares like in sinking sand.
Yet still I know You’re by my side,
Your presence steadies all my mind.
I know, my God, You are always near,
Your gentle presence calms my fear.
Don’t let my trembling hand slip free,
Just stay awhile and be with me.
When dead ends press me to the wall,
And pain cuts deep through soul and all,
Your voice still reaches through the night,
And speaks to turn my fear to light.
My companion—pain, both night and day,
No one can take this weight away.
I gasp for breath through tears I hide,
Afraid of storms I hold inside.
What waits for me tomorrow’s day,
I do not know — but trust Your way.
Among my friends or silently,
Please do not let pain dwell in me.
Thank You, my God, for faithful friends,
For hope that shines when darkness bends.
Though I may fade for but a breath,
You’ll show Your power over death.
I want to find a way out now,
Be healed and still not close my eyes.
Please help me find that path somehow,
If not—you still can make me rise.
You will not leave me in the gloom,
In cold, dim earth to face my doom.
You’ll call me soon to rise above
And lead me to eternal love.
You will not leave me in the dark,
I know You’ll bring me back to life.
Your light still shines through every mark,
And leads me through the deepest strife.
