Farewell and blest forgiveness —
Two steps upon the Way.
Farewell to sin’s dark bondage —
Christ risen on this Day!
Through fasting, tears, and vigil
We tread the narrow road.
Till bursts the tomb in splendour —
Christ risen, Son of God!
The stone is rolled away in awe,
The seals of death undone.
The gates of hell are shattered —
Christ risen! Victory won!
O strait the path and narrow
That leadeth through the grave,
Yet down descends the Mighty —
Christ risen strong to save!
He raiseth fallen Adam,
He breaketh every chain!
O death, where is thy sting now?
Christ risen! He shall reign!
