An old friend called me yesterday
There was a job in the jungle, say,
A coup, some rebels on the way
And I've got lots of bills to pay
I hung my boots, I'm on the lean
The skill is buried, though I see all clean:
The jungles are still green and mazed
The blood, the sweat, the frantic race
I need the cash, I'm saying "yes"
I packed my bag, forgot the rest
Old brothers by my side again
We'll fly into the lion's den
The last assault, the final ride
We drop by night, we burn their pride
The deeper we go, the harder they fight
A million shadows rose for their rights
Not rebels now — a nation's cry
And paratroopers fell from the sky
We take the checkpoints, torch the trucks
The heat is hell, we're out of luck
They keep on coming, wave on wave
We dig our graves, we try to be brave
The food is gone, the ammo low
The faces of my brothers show
The same despair I've seen before
This time there is no winning war
There aren't bush rebels anymore
We fight the nation, rich and poor
The old regime was a bloody curse
And we're just chasing heavy purse
The last assault, the final ride
We drop by night, we burn their pride
The deeper we go, the harder they fight
A million shadows rose for their rights
Not rebels now — a nation's cry
And paratroopers fell from the sky
So we retreat in mud and pain
We're waiting for the coming plane
Under the fire we crawl inside
I see the faces of my friends who died
I'm done with this, I'm going home
To work a job, to live alone
Let the young and hungry take the lead
I've planted all the blood I need
No more savannah, no more rain
No more brothers dying in vain
