The Last Good Day
https://suno.com/s/W9RLJLCQFFXBin34
I had a house with a porch and a swing
A job that paid for most everything
A girl who laughed when I’d come through the door
I didn’t ask for much — maybe that was the flaw
I’d drink my coffee, watch the sun rise
Never looked too close at the cracks or the lies
The world was small but it fit in my palms
Till I opened my mouth in the wrong place at once
A word, a laugh, a joke gone wrong
A man in a suit who stayed too long
He smiled and said, “No harm, my friend”
But I’d already stepped where the road bends
He came in the night like a friend with a drink
He took my name and he taught me to sink
One hand on my shoulder, one hand on the knife
Said, “Trust me, brother, I’ll save your life”
But the last good day — I let it slip
With a handshake, a promise, a poisonous gift
He called me partner, he called me kin
Said, “There’s a deal that’s gonna pull you in”
I sold the house, I sold the rest
I put my faith in a man who knew best
The money went first, then the name, then the ring
The girl found a door, I found the sting
He’d sit beside me, pour me a glass
“Don’t worry, brother, this too shall pass”
I begged the walls, I begged the phone
I begged the man who sat on the throne
He’d shake his head and call me son
“You’re almost there — you’re almost done”
He came in the night like a friend with a drink
He took my name and he taught me to sink
One hand on my shoulder, one hand on the knife
Said, “Trust me, brother, I’ll save your life”
But the last good day — I let it slip
With a handshake, a promise, a poisonous gift
One night the phone rang — a voice I knew
A man I’d loaned my soul to
Said, “It was me. From the start. From the laugh.
I took your life just to watch it collapse.”
I sat in the dark for an hour or more
I’d lost the man I was before
I found the steel in the chest by the bed
And I loaded the truth in every lead
I walked through the door where he held his court
The men in the chairs, the whiskey, the sport
He saw my face and he started to smile
Said, “There’s my brother — let’s talk for a while”
I came in the night like a ghost with a grudge
No more brother — no more judge
I put the steel where his heart used to be
And I watched the man who made me free
I dropped the gun in the street by the light
I ran through the city, I ran through the night
No house, no name, no hands to hold
Just the story they’ll tell when the night gets cold
…I had a house with a porch and a swing
