The Window

They found me in the alley, thin and cold
A scrap of fur, a story left untold
They brought me in, they gave me a name
They thought their love would heal the shame
The bed is soft, the bowl is full
No more hunger, no more pull
They stroke my head, they call me theirs
But I still climb the wooden stairs
To sit and watch the world I lost
The rain, the frost, the highest cost
They think I’m resting, think I’m tame
They don’t know I still know my name
I was the shadow in the night
The hunter with no second chance
I earned my scars, I owned my fight
I answered no one’s glance
Now I’m warm, now I’m safe
But the fire in me’s gone
I traded the storm for a quiet cage
And I stare at the window all day long
I remember snow that burned my paws
The taste of blood, the broken jaws
The nights I slept with one eye wide
The mornings I was glad to be alive
Here the days all bleed as one
No need to run, no need for sun
They love me well, they love me true
But love is not the same as you
I hear the wind call through the glass
The life I was, the life I had
They call it cruel, they call it wild
But I was whole when I was exiled
I was the shadow in the night
The hunter with no second chance
I earned my scars, I owned my fight
I answered no one’s glance
Now I’m warm, now I’m safe
But the fire in me’s gone
I traded the storm for a quiet cage
And I stare at the window all day long
I could scratch the screen, I could break the lock
I could run till my lungs burst, run till I drop
But they’d search the streets, they’d call my name
And drag me back to the window frame
So I sit and watch the falling dark
A prisoner with a willing heart
They think I’m sleeping where I lie
But I’m just waiting to die
I was the shadow in the night
I was the storm, I was the bite
Now I’m warm, now I’m safe
But the fire’s gone
I traded the storm for a quiet cage
And I stare at the window
All day long
The children laugh, the kettle hums
I hear the door, a stranger comes
They say I’m lucky, say I’m blessed
But I was freer in the wilderness
…the window.
