Blood And The Bone

I rode the frontier when the West was wild
A man with a gun and a nameless smile
I kept to myself, I owed no one
Till I met her where the rivers run
She moved like smoke through the desert pines
Eyes like flint, and her voice like wine
An Apache daughter, proud and free
She looked at me — and I ceased to be
They told me love was a settler’s lie
But I swore on my boots I would never lie
She gave me her hand, she gave me her word
And for once in my life, I knew what I heard
But the blue coats came with a flag unfurled
Said, “Pick your side, this ain’t your world”
I stood with the rifle, I wore the grey
I thought I could walk in a righteous way
I marched with the army through dust and flame
I told myself it wasn’t her name
That burned in my chest when the torches lit
That I was still the man I meant to be
Then I saw her — barefoot, bruised, alone
Her eyes were stones, her voice a bone:
"You carry their iron. You carry their lies.
You looked in my face and still chose their side.
I gave you my silence. I gave you my skin.
You brought me the wolves — and you call this love?”
The wind went still. The world went black.
I saw the man I’d never take back.
I dropped my rifle, I turned my horse
And I rode to her through a burning course
I crossed the line, I broke the grey
Let the blue coats burn, let the preachers pray
I found my side where the blood ran red
Not by the flag — but by the bed
“You came back.
You came back.”
“I came back.”
Now I ride with the shadow, I ride with the ghost
Of every blue soldier who came for the most
I sold my name, I buried my past
But I found my soul in the war at last
(She) They carved her land.
(He) They carved my skin.
(Together) But love ain’t a flag — love ain’t a sin.
(He) I chose the fire.
(She) I chose the bone.
(Together) And I’ll die beside you — with nothing to atone.
