Salt And The Wheel

The harbor lights are fading now
Her figure on the pier — a silhouette
I hold the rail, I make no vow
There’s nothing left for me to regret
The rope is cast, the tide is calling
The wind already tastes like salt and stone
I hear the ocean’s endless falling
And for a moment — I’m not alone
I ask myself: why do I go?
Why leave the warmth, the bed, the hand?
Why trade the fields I’ll never sow
For water with no land?
But the sea — she never asks for reasons
She takes you whole or lets you be
She tears the calendars to pieces
She doesn’t know infinity
And I — I am her tide, her breath, her season
I was born to be wild and free
I see her face against the rail
The one who waits with no name yet
I promised nothing — not to fail
Nor to return — nor to forget
The waves are mountains, green and black
The sky is just a memory of blue
There’s no way forward, no way back
There’s only what I choose to do
I ask again: why do I stay?
Why chase the storm, the ice, the deep?
Why walk the edge and not the bay?
The answer — I don’t sleep
The sea — she never asks for reasons
She takes you whole or lets you be
She tears the calendars to pieces
She doesn’t know infinity
And I — I am her tide, her breath, her season
I was born to be wild and free
I thought I wanted solid ground
A house, a fence, a quiet name
But every root I tried to found
Just withered in the flame
The only peace I’ve ever known
Is when the deck is pitching wild
When I’m not flesh — but salt and bone
A force without a child
So let the sea decide my story
Let her keep or let me drown
I’ll meet the waves in all their glory
I’ll wear the wind like a crown
And she — she waits but does not worry
She knew the man she laid her hand upon
Was born to be wild and free
Born to be gone
I turn to shore — one last look
She raises her hand
I raise mine
And the sea takes us both
In her time.
