The salt remembers

He swore he'd be the last to leave...
But the last was me.

My hull was a hymn, my deck was a prayer
I carried his dreams through the electric air
He carved his name in my wooden spine
Promised the ocean he'd make me divine
But the storm had teeth and the storm had claws
It ripped through the sky and it broke all the laws
He stood at the helm and he started to shake
Saw the hole in my side, felt his heart start to break
Not for me, not for the crew, but for his own skin
He lowered the boat and he climbed right in

The crew held fast to the rails and the mast
They sang "God Save the Captain" until the very last
The water filled their lungs, their eyes, their ears
I felt their fear dissolve into the years
I settled on the bottom, I became a grave
A monument to the foolish and the brave
He reached the shore, he bought a new name
He told a new story, he played a new game
But every wave that kisses his feet at night
Carries a piece of me, carries the light
Of the ones who stayed, of the ones who sank
Of the ones who remember, rank by rank

WHO TELLS THE STORY WHEN THE SHIP GOES DOWN?
WHO TELLS THE STORY?
THE SALT IN THE WOUND, THE SALT IN THE SEA
THE SALT REMEMBERS ME

YOU LEFT US TO THE SILENCE!
YOU LEFT US TO THE SALT!
THE SALT DOESN'T FORGET!
THE SALT DOESN'T FORGET YOUR FAULT!

I am the salt, I am the sea
I am the thing that couldn't be
Saved by the captain, saved by the lie
I am the ship that learned to die
And in my dying, I became
The keeper of every name
