The Essence of Love

You used to live with one great yearning:
To find a passion like no other.
To feel a boundless fire burning,
And lose yourself within its smother.

You fell in love, gave all your trust,
Immersing in those feelings deep.
But when the gold turned into dust,
You fell away, and learned to weep.

You sought the flame and felt the sting,
In love a dozen times or more.
To every parting, you would cling,
Then seek a rematch, like before.

The years have passed; you’re cautious now,
Your feelings hidden in the shade.
But anxious shadows cloud your brow,
As faith in love begins to fade.

Yet love arrives when least expected:
So quiet, simple, and so stray.
Into a world, by you detected
Through signs that subtly lead the way.

And you are calm, at peace, serene,
Within your flow of passing years,
A newfound feeling, pure and clean,
Has finally dispelled your fears.

Now in your soul, the children play.
You’re full of strength, your mind is bright.
Your world is soft in every way,
Beside your love, you radiate light.

For love is not a spark or craze,
It’s calmer than those fleeting starts—
The will to give through all our days:
The very essence of our hearts.
