I meet the Dawn

I meet the dawn with deliberate cheer,
I seek it out, year after year –
For I await its glow once more.
Yet it arrives never, evermore,
Not winter’s chill, nor summer’s blaze,
Not daylight hours, nor midnight haze –
Is there a cause, a hidden base?
A firm foundation in this case?
Must Bethlehem’s stars realign just so?
Must landowning tortoise and whales below
Keep basking glad in solar fire?
They need some hope, some bright desire –
To spur the sun from rest to climb
O’er our tired world in proper time.
What motives strong could make it rise?
Convincing calls from earthly skies?
The sun stays sunk, it will not mount.
I wait and wait, my heart a fount
Of longing – when, oh when, I cry?
I’m near to tears, my spirits sigh.
No omen gleams in gloom’s dark sea,
No sign to ease this wait for me.
