The universe at play

A stranger in each city’s glow,
A face I almost didn’t know.
We passed like shadows, soft and slow,
Speaking words the stars outgrew.
Our tangled paths began to grow,
Each step a thread I tried to follow.
But eyes were down, we let it go,
And trusted time to see it through.

So we drive the dark away,
Love in just this broken way.
Though we’re not side-by-side today,
It’s not our fault, the seasons say—
It’s just the universe at play.

Doors are locked with iron clocks,
The modern key a look that mocks.
We laugh, but stand on separate rocks,
And don’t know how to turn the lock.
The thread we held began to fray,
Our steps just led us both astray.
We looked, and in the dimming day,
Just wondered how to find our way.

Still, we drive the dark away,
Love in just this broken way.
Though we’re not side-by-side today,
It’s not our fault, the seasons say—
It’s just the universe at play.

A silent space, a crowded line,
Your almost-hand in almost-mine.
A language lost, a faded sign…
But in the static, something fine—
A melody without a rhyme.

And we drive the dark away,
Love in just this broken way.
Though we’re not side-by-side today,
It’s not our fault, the seasons say…
It’s not our fault, the stars betray…
It’s just the universe at play.
