First Love

I know you were waiting.
I know, because I was waiting too,
Not knowing where or when
I would see you again.

I know you read my poems.
I wrote them, knowing that maybe,
You were reading them...
And your lips, and your eyes
I would recall
Until a foolish smile came,
Until shivers ran across my spine.

I know, so much water has flown —
Seas and two oceans.
And yet I dreamed
That the old folks were right,
That it’s never too late,
Never too early,
That time is not glass
And the splashes of the past
Can still be gathered,
Even if it’s just crumbs.

No, we didn’t break anything,
We never said “Goodbye.”
We just cut patterns by different measures,
Went our separate ways through life.
Searched
For each other in distant lands,
In the eyes of others
We searched...

And so naively waited
To return to the letters,
Which we once tenderly sent
To each other,
Back when we both suddenly came to know
What Love is...

...I know you were waiting.
I know, because I was waiting too, my Love
Until a foolish smile came,
Until shivers ran across my spine.
To return to Us just once,
My star,
And dissolve with you
In our past
At least one more time...
Oh, how I want this,
God!
