Longing

Longing

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
"I'll leave, but I'll return," you said to me.
And my heart shuddered, restless, anxiously,
As if startled by a ghost — a fantasy
Of the impossible, the utterly impossible.

[Verse 2]
"I'll leave," you said, "but I'll return."
A moment later, you forgot the words you'd spoken.
And still I wait, not knowing what I yearn,
Though many days since that brief vow was broken.

[Chorus]
And what's between us is not just years, you see, —
It's decades now, like mountains, cold and vast.
And you will not come back. You'll never be
Here, past the snowstorm-shrouded mountain pass.

[Instrumental break]

[Bridge]
But in that moment, telling me "I'll come" —
You meant it then. And, knowing this is true,
I'm waiting for something, hopeless, numb,
In pain and longing wait. As poets do.

[Chorus]
And what's between us is not just years, you see, —
It's decades now, like mountains, cold and vast.
And you will not come back. You'll never be
Here, past the snowstorm-shrouded mountain pass.

[Outro]
