Happy New Year! ABBA

No more champagne
And the fireworks are through
Here we are, me and you,
Feeling lost and feeling blue.
It’s the end of the party
And the morning seems so grey.
So unlike yesterday
Now’s the time for us to say…

Happy new year!
Happy new year!
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbour is a friend.
Happy new year!
Happy new year!
May we all have our hopes
our will to try
If we don’t we might as
well lay down and die -
You and I.

Sometimes I see
How the Brave New World arrives
And I see how it thrives
In the ashes of our lives.
Oh yes, man is a fool
And he thinks he’ll be okay,
Dragging on, feet of clay,
Never knowing he’s astray,
Keeps on going anyway…

Happy new year!
Happy new year!
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbour is a friend.
Happy new year!
Happy new year!
May we all have our hopes
our will to try
If we don’t we might as
well lay down and die -
You and I.

Seems to me now,
That the dreams we had before
Are all dead, nothing more
Than confetti on the floor.
It’s the end of a decade
In another ten years time.
Who can say what we’ll find,
What lies waiting down the line
In the end of eighty-nine…

Happy new year!
Happy new year!
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbour is a friend.
Happy new year!
Happy new year!
May we all have our hopes
our will to try
If we don’t we might as
well lay down and die -
You and I.

ABBA is a Swedish English-language pop group formed in 1972. The band’s name is an acronym made up of the first names of its members: Agnetha, Bj;rn, Benny, and Anni-Frid. ABBA achieved massive popularity across Europe and the United Kingdom, especially during the 1970s and 1980s, becoming one of the most successful music acts in history.

In 1982, the group temporarily suspended its activities. More than 30 years later, in 2016, ABBA reunited and recorded new songs, including I Still Have Faith in You and Don’t Shut Me Down, later announcing the release of additional new material.

The song Happy New Year was written during the band’s vacation in Barbados and was included in their 1980 album. Although it became widely popular, it was not released as a single until 1999. Originally, the song was intended to be part of a New Year’s musical, a project that was never completed, leaving Happy New Year as a standalone composition.

The song reached the Swedish charts three times, each time peaking at number four: upon its initial release, again in 2008 after a reissue, and in 2000 following a cover version recorded by another Swedish group. It also entered the Top 10 charts in Norway, the Netherlands, and Denmark.

During the songwriting process, the working title of the track was Daddy Don’t Get Drunk on Christmas Day, and the original concept carried a more ironic tone. Over time, Happy New Year evolved into one of the most recognizable and beloved New Year’s songs worldwide.
