Dixie pray

Oh, listen ye brothers,
‘Neath the magnolia’s shade,
Where the Mississippi rolls
Like a prayer unpaid.
Men dream their visions
In the heat of the day,
Some chase the glory
Of the battlefield fray.

 1.2
But hark! through the cannon’s roar
And the rebel yell,
The truest dream calls
Like a church bell’s swell—
‘Tis family gathered
‘Round the hearth’s warm glow,
A home with a porch
Where the honeysuckle grows.

2
One boy from Georgia,
Musket in his hand,
Dreams of the Union broken,
A sovereign land.
Another in Virginia,
Plowin’ furrows deep,
Yearns for cotton fields white
And harvests to reap.

A lass in Carolina,
Bonnet tied tight,
Longs for silk gowns dancin’
Under moonlight.
The preacher in Alabama,
Knees bent in the dust,
Seeks souls for the Savior
In Heaven’s pure trust.

4
And leadin’ us onward
Through valley and storm,
The Lord God Almighty
In His merciful form—
Like Moses ‘fore Pharaoh,
Or David with sling,
He parts the red seas
Of the sufferin’ we bring.

5
Dream on, ye wanderers,
Of gold or of fame,
But cling to the dream
That bears the holy name:
Family, home, and the God
Who charts the way,
Through war-torn paths
To eternal day.

So march, Southern heart,

With your banner unfurled,
Your dreams may vary
In this troubled world,
But the Master’s hand points
To the ultimate prize—
Kinfolk, a hearth,
And Paradise skies.

6.2
Amen, and amen,
Let the chorus ring true,
Press on to your dream
As the good Lord leads you.
