Chapter 1. The Big Dog
 
Sasha was five years old when he had that dream.
He was walking down a familiar street near his house. The sun was shining brightly, birds were singing, and everything seemed normal. But suddenly, a huge black dog ran out from around the corner. It was almost as big as Sasha himself, with red eyes and bared teeth.
The dog lunged at the boy and sank its teeth into his arm. Sasha screamed and tried to break free. He hit the dog with his free hand, tried to push it away with his foot, but nothing worked. His blows seemed to pass through the air, causing the dog no harm.
The dog held him tight, and Sasha felt fear filling his entire body. His heart was beating so loudly it seemed the whole world could hear it.
And then something inside Sasha changed.
He stopped struggling. He simply stopped and looked into the dog's eyes. In them, he saw not anger, but something else. Something like... loneliness?
"You're a good dog," Sasha said quietly, extending his free hand. "You don't need to do this. It's not nice."
And he petted the dog on the head.
The dog froze. Its red eyes dimmed, became normal, brown. It released Sasha's arm and took a step back. Then another step. And then it simply sat down and looked at the boy with such sadness that Sasha wanted to hug it.
"It's okay," he whispered. "I'm not angry."
The dog gave a quiet bark, turned around, and ran away, dissolving into the morning mist.
Sasha woke up.
He was lying in his bed, and his heart was still beating fast. But there was no fear. Instead of fear, something warm and bright was growing inside. Something like pride.
"I did it," Sasha whispered into the darkness. "I wasn't scared. I... felt sorry for her."
From that day on, everything changed.
