Wings spread wide
Winged little ant, why do you need wings?
Where are you suddenly longing to fly?
Why waste your strength on such foolish things,
When even the red sun is fading the sky?
Go back, my friend, to your busy hill,
Your colony’s work is never done.
A fresh young burdock grows over the field,
And the younger ones soon will be grown.
Chorus
Wings spread wide in the streams of wind,
Back to his home he cast one glance.
Even if I fall, not covering distance,
God gave me wings — so I’ll take my chance.
Verse 2
Front tiny legs leave the trembling leaf,
Newborn wings — and their very first beat.
In spider’s sight and the others who see,
The ant chose risk over comfort and sleep.
He is flying! — the grasses all hum,
Doesn’t matter where — but truly he flies.
From above he sees dew drops run,
Knocked away by those rushing lives.
Chorus
Wings spread wide in the streams of wind,
Back to his home he cast one glance.
Even if I fall, not covering distance,
God gave me wings — so I’ll take my chance.
Verse 3
Further and further his home drifts away,
In his heart — both joy and ache.
Wings pushed him onward into the way,
I tell you — that choice was not a mistake.
This meadow is strange, unknown to his sight,
What lies beyond — he cannot know.
I won’t reveal how ends his flight,
One thing is clear: he flew — so he could go.
Chorus
Wings spread wide in the streams of wind,
Back to his home he cast one glance.
Even if I fall, not covering distance,
God gave me wings — so I’ll take my chance.
