City I Never Stayed

I come to you each year, familiar streets,
Your lights still call through winter's bitter sleet.
The same cafes, the same old haunts I know,
But in my heart, I always let you go.

City of deferred love, you pull me near,
Promise everything, then disappear.
I taste your nights, your fleeting charms so sweet,
But pack my bags before the morning meets.

Your bridges glow, your rivers sing my name,
Yet something's missing in your endless game.
I feel the pull, the almost-home delight,
But turn away before it turns to night.

One day I almost stayed, almost chose your shore,
Almost let you claim me evermore.
But fate whispered soft: "There's one more door..."
And led me to the city I adore.

City of deferred love, farewell once more...
I taste your nights, then walk out your door...
