The Rings
Just close your eyes and you are there again
A forest deep, a lake, a river yonder
The gentle roofs of homes along the glen.
Here everything moves softly, never pressing.
I think I’ll wander to the village store
The herbs and fruits, the orchard’s usual blessing;
The cheese and olives from the farms next door.
I’ll take some bread, a wedge of local Cheddar
A bottle of that famous Penfolds red
Some ham awarded with a golden medal
For evening comfort, then I’ll go to bed
My local landlord is a grumpy fellow
With sons and daughters and a loving wife
The moon shines bright, the night is warm and mellow
And I can’t help but love this country life
But never rush to trade your life for pasture
A day or two is all I ever crave,
My thoughts of home will make my heart beat faster
What's left behind is calling me again
But now the stars above are burning brightly
Let’s not imagine what the morning brings
Some joys are far too fine to taste so lightly
I watch the smoke unfold in fragile rings
The tiny rings of smoke that drift and hover
Dissolving high above that magic land
I know a place - no need to travel over
Close both your eyes… and you are there, my friend
