of the poem "Rus', where are you rushing?"

Give an answer! - It doesn't answer..."

Two centuries ago,
Nikolai Vasilich GOGOL
In his "Dead Souls"
Asked Russia,
the Troika, -
(to which he was the first in the world
to compare her!), -
a rhetorical question:
"Rus', where are you rushing?
Give an answer!"
Two centuries have passed,
Much water has flown under the bridge,
Much power has changed in Mother Russia,
But Russia is still
Unable to give
Answer to that question. -

She has nothing to say -
Where is she flying? And even what
She would like
to say,
Through the lips of her people,
She cannot say. -

All the authorities
that have succeeded her, -
From ancient times
And to this day, -
Constantly
gag her mouth
With the hands of the prince's
Druzhinniki,
The Tsar's oprichniki,
Gendarmes,
And other various services
Of the serving people
Right down to the guardsmen
Of the National
Guard.
From that time on,
And the people, as PUSHKIN
With his stage direction
In "Boris Godunov"
remarked,

Remain silent. For centuries, proverbs have been circulating in Rus':
"Silence is golden,
but speech is silver" (sometimes amounting to
30 pieces of silver),
"The whip of an axe's butt cannot break"; "There's no defense against a crowbar";
and "Eat mushroom pies,
keep your mouth shut" -
not without reason.

КУДА ТЫ, РУСЬ,
В МОЛЧАНИИ


         "Русь, куда несешься ты?
          Дай ответ! - Не дает ответа...".

Назад тому
Два века
Николай Василич ГОГОЛЬ
В своих «Мертвых душах»
Задал Россие, -
Птице-Тройке, -
(с которой он первым в мире
 так ее сравнил!), -
Риторический вопрос:
«Русь, куда несешься ты?
 Дай ответ!».
Прошли два века,
Много утекло воды,
Не раз сменились власти
В матушке-России,
Но все еще Роосия
Не в состоянье дать
На тот вопрос ответ. -

Ей нечего сказать, -
Куда она летит.
И даже то, что
И хотела бы
Она сказать,
Устами своего народа,—
Сказать она
Она не может. -

Все власти,
В ней сменившиеся, -
С времен древнейших
И поныне, -
Постоянно
Рот ей закрывают
Руками княжеских
Дружинников,
Царских опричников,
Жандармов,
И прочего служб разных
Служивого народа
Вплоть до гвардейцев
Национальной
Гвардии.
С того-то исстари
И народ, - как ПУШКИН
Своей ремаркою
В "Борисе Годунове"
То заметил, -
Безмолвствует.
Веками гуляют по Руси
Пословицы, -
«Молчанье - золото,
 а слово - серебро», -
(порой бывало в сумме
 30-ти серебренников), -
«Плетью обуха
 не перебить»
Да «Ешь пироги с грибами,
    держи язык за зубами», -
Совсем не беспричинно.
