What does 'Everything I’m not made me everything i am' mean?

Kanye West talks about how he never fit into what media or other black people wanted to portray a black person as, but since he felt singled out that only made him go further in terms of pushing honesty and his unique vision.



I believe it means that all the qualities that people want him to have, but he lacks them, is the reason why he has all the other great qualities that he has.

i think it’s saying that you are defined by the person you want to yourself to be, not by what others want

Just listen to the verses in the song. It's basically saying he will never be what society expects him to be, or he won't be like other rappers etc, or rap what the record labels expect him to rap about and that's what makes him uniquely who he is



It doesn’t even have to be that deep. Think about it, we are all everything we are not, that’s all that’s left. Out of everything I could be, all the things I am not, leaves the rest—that’s what I am.


I think it’s about the fact that whatever you do or don’t do defines who you are



thats how i always interpreted it, every imperfection or mistake makes up who you are as a person which should be appreciated “everything im not made me everything i am”

The song is about being driven by insecurity. You can replace insecurity with a number of similar words that describe internal struggles, or your own experiences that can’t be described in a single word. People in here zooming in on a particular line or few lines, which are meant to be examples of the greater meaning. Our faults and areas we lack in (or just feel that we do) drive us to develop a sense of internal adversity and through living with that adversity we become greater. Battle tested, “people talkin shit but when the shit hit the fan…”. Similar to hard times make strong men. Everything I’m not made me everything I am.
