Lullaby

The sun has dipped below the trees,
soft shadows stretch across the floor
Sleep, my son, I’ll carry you,
your father’s arms will rock you more

I’ll warm the milk, the shawl we’ll spread,
to shield you from the buzzing gnats
The cat will curl upon your feet,
and guard your dreams where moonlight bats

May summer fill your sleeping mind -
golden light, the scent of hay,
your mother’s voice, your father’s hold,
as night unfolds its gentle sway

We laugh, we dance, our hearts are light,
your smile a spark in twilight’s glow
You nestle close, arms wrapped so tight,
love’s quiet river, soft and slow

Grow strong, my dear, be brave and true,
eat well, stay warm, don’t fall ill
You’ll be our shield, our steadfast hand,
and we will love you - always will

Sleep now, my love, breathe soft and deep,
I’ll cradle you against my chest
The purring cat keeps watch so near,
to chase the dark and grant you rest
