I Marched Through Hell for a Shadow
Ashes clothed my weary soul,
Infernal gates demanded toll,
Lost for hope I cannot know -
I marched through hell for a shadow.
Burning bridges choked my cry,
Dreams dissolved but would not die.
I marched through hell for a shadow’s hand,
Crossed the flames of no man’s land,
Steeled my heart to understand,
Chasing echoes through the sand -
I marched through hell for a shadow’s hand.
Molten rivers, endless night,
Took me far beyond the light,
Each memory a phantom fight,
Chasing you, my lost delight.
Burning bridges choked my cry,
Dreams dissolved but would not die.
I marched through hell for a shadow’s hand,
Crossed the flames of no man’s land,
Steeled my heart to understand,
Chasing echoes through the sand -
I marched through hell for a shadow’s hand.
Scars that burn and never fade,
Every debt of love repaid,
Heard your name through fire relayed,
But truth and hope began to trade.
If time reversed and fate allowed,
Would I kneel or just be proud?
Would I trade the flame for shroud,
Or chase that shadow through the crowd?
Now the ash is all I know,
Yet with each step the embers glow,
Haunted on this path I go -
I marched through hell for a shadow.
