Moonlit Lament - S. Yesenin EN translation

Through the straw-lit morning hollow,
Soft as breath, her russet brood,
Seven dreams she cradles closely,
Warmth their guardian, love their mood.

Snow steams under fur and body,
Melting quiet in her care;
World so small, so tender, so whole,
In her arms, no fears to bear.

Hush now, hush, you hearts of sorrow,
Under winter's watchful eye,
Moonlit night, so cold and narrow,
Falls the gold, as stars do die.

As the evening shadows gather,
Roosting chickens rest on the bar;
Master comes with steps unyielding,
Takes her little ones so far.

Through the snow, she chases, sobbing,
Whimpering, brave and small;
Where the water's open, shivering,
Trembles still, a silent fall.

Crawling home, her body quivering,
Snow and sweat along her side;
Sees the moon above the homestead,
Like her pup in silver light.

Hush now, hush, you hearts of sorrow,
Under winter's watchful eye,
Moonlit night, so cold and narrow,
Falls the gold, as stars do die.

Eyes grow glassy, tears of gold flow,
In the frost, they fall like stars;
Each a lost, a russet shadow,
In the cold, her heart implores.

Inspired by the poem by S. Yesenin (1915),
