Saffron Land

English translation of Sergei Yesenin's poem
‘Свет вечерний шафранного края’ (1924)

Roses in the fields at night,
Wandering in silver light.
Sing to me, my tender one -
Just the song the moon has sung.

Roses in the fields, my love -
Blowing in the midnight wind.
All we ever dreamt of, love,
Fading where the road begins.

Shadows on a quiet land,
Memories I understand.
Let me hold your voice tonight,
Soft and distant, out of sight.

Roses in the fields, my love -
Blowing in the midnight wind.
All we ever dreamt of, love,
Fading where the road begins.

We are only passing through -
Moonlight, heartbeat, fog and dew.
What we lost, the night will keep.
Say my name - and fall asleep.

Final Chorus
Roses in the fields, my love -
Blowing in the midnight wind.
I will wander long enough,
Till the night returns again.
Roses… in the fields.
