Madonna-EN translation-A. Pushkin

Madonna
(based on the poem by Alexander Pushkin)

Not with the paintings of the ancient hand,
Would I adorn my humble, quiet room,
Where learned voices speak and softly stand,
And shadows guard the corners of its gloom.

But in my heart I prayed for one alone -
A vision pure, a face of grace unknown;
That from the clouds of heaven’s silent height,
The Virgin and her Child would shine in light.

O holy one, so bright and mild,
Your gaze is gentle, heaven’s child.
Through you I see the world made clear,
My soul is calm, for you are near.

Fulfilled my wish, O Lord divine,
You sent this wonder, pure and kind;
My Madonna, through your eyes I see
The truth of love and purity.

No angel choir, no marble throne -
Just you and He, in light alone;
Beneath the palm of Zion’s hill,
The world grows silent, soft, and still.

O holy one, so bright and mild,
Your gaze is gentle, heaven’s child.
You are the prayer that love has sung,
The purest heart, forever young.
