Netherlandish Proverbs was painted in 1559 by the Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. In this painting, the artist included literal and exaggerated illustrations of more than a hundred proverbs in Dutch.
Bruegel was a Dutch Renaissance painter and printmaker, famous for painting landscapes and peasant scenes. He gained experience in this style during his time in Italy and France, before going to Antwerp, where he became a master in the painter's guild.
