This piece is called Landscape With The Fall of Icarus attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder. At first glance, you might think you’re looking at a peaceful coastal scene capturing the everyday life of rural folk. But if you look a little closer, you’ll notice that nothing is at it seems.

We’re given a birds eye view of a vast, pastoral landscape by the sea. There's a farmer plowing the land, a shepherd with his flock of sheep and a fisherman by the water. They're all going about their normal tasks. Something starts to feel off about that when you realize there's a pair of legs thrashing around in the water to the bottom right of the painting. This is Icarus, a character in Greek Mythology.

Who is Icarus? Why is he splashing around in the sea? And maybe the biggest question: Why does he seem like an afterthought when he’s supposed to be the main focus of the painting? Watch the video to find out!

Thank you for watching!
