Completely blinded, I would look at you

It is so agonizing and so sore,
To know that I was deeply wrong 'bout you.
I never saw the heart I now abhor,
And to a sweet mirage, I bid adieu.
You spoke so many wondrous words to me,
And showered compliments just like they're coins.
And I, not knowing your reality,
Fell for the lovely vows your tongue purloins.

Completely blinded, I would look at you
Through fragile glasses of a rosy shade.
And, as it seems, destroying my soul too,
I failed to see the essence you displayed.
And even when I saw the real you there,
Your inner self, so cold and plain to see,
I justified it in my heart's despair,
Searched for some holiness in misery.

I'm sorry for that long-lost, wasted day,
And for the time that flowed out like a stream.
I'm sorry for the fire thrown away,
That I was giving from a soul supreme.
I've learned a lesson at a price so high,
A heavy toll was paid upon this road.
Forever different, I am now, and I
Cannot return to my past abode.
