Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) fumed on Thursday at the idea that Trump’s Department of Justice is sending the president’s former personal lawyer turned top DOJ official, Todd Blanche, to interview convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell.
President Donald Trump’s administration has been roiled in controversy since an early July joint memo from the FBI and DOJ concluded that none of the conspiracy theories surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell’s former boyfriend and associate, are true. The memo concluded that Epstein committed suicide and did not have a “client list” of allegedly powerful people engaged in underage sex trafficking.
In the weeks since the memo’s release, more information has come out about Trump’s close ties to Epstein, and on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Attorney General Pam Bondi had informed Trump back in May that his name appears in the documents related to the Epstein case.
Schumer accused Trump’s DOJ of tilting the scales in his favor, writing, “Sending Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, to interview Ghislaine Maxwell while she’s in prison, a woman who’s been convicted of abusing people, to offer some kind of corrupt deal so that she can exonerate Donald Trump just stinks of high corruption.”
“Under no circumstances should anyone from Trump’s DOJ be allowed to privately interview Ghislaine Maxwell. The conflict of interest is glaring,” he added.
Schumer later posted on X, “The Senate needs to hear directly from administration officials about Trump’s name appearing in these files and their complete lack of transparency. Trump and his lackeys were all caught red-handed in more lies.”
He also added, “Attorney General Pam Bondi just does Trump’s bidding. And no matter how you slice it, she lied to the American people.” Bondi has been under particular criticism for her apparently contradictory statements on the Epstein case, including that she once had his client list “sitting on her desk.”
Schumer also weighed in on the WSJ report, writing, “It’s the first day of House Republicans fleeing town for their Epstein Recess. They high-tailed it out of here hoping to hide the story. But the story is growing louder by the hour with Trump and the administration’s lies.”
The New York Times reported on Thursday that Blanche was also previously aware that Trump’s name is mentioned in the Epstein case files – a case that the DOJ, where Blanche is the number 2 official, declared officially closed.
