Trump's DOJ responds to "daylight" with FBI regarding Epstein files
Story by Gabe Whisnant
07/11/25
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche rebuked any "daylight" between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding conclusions reached in the Jeffrey Epstein files memo.
Blanche said that President Donald Trump's DOJ, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, worked closely with FBI director Kash Patel and his deputy, Dan Bongino, on the unsigned memo that concluded that the convicted sex offender had died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 and did not have a "client list."

Blanche posted, "I worked closely with @FBIDirectorKash and @FBIDDBongino on the joint FBI and DOJ memo regarding the Epstein Files. All of us signed off on the contents of the memo and the conclusions stated in the memo. The suggestion by anyone that there was any daylight between the FBI and DOJ leadership on this memo's composition and release is patently false."
When reached via email, the DOJ directed Newsweek to Blanche's post. Newsweek has reached out to the FBI via email on Friday afternoon for comment.
Why It Matters
Earlier this week, the Department of Justice and FBI announced the results of a joint review of "investigative holdings relating to Jeffrey Epstein," concluding that the convicted sex offender had died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting further sex trafficking charges.

The agencies also said Epstein did not have a "client list," something Trump, a former longtime friend of Epstein, suggested during his presidential campaign that he would release if elected.
Before Trump's return to office, Patel and Bongino called on the bureau to release information about Epstein.
What to Know
Based on widespread reporting, Bongino is reportedly considering resigning following a major dispute between the FBI and the Justice Department over the fallout from the release of the Jeffrey Epstein memo.
Earlier in the day, Axios reported that Bongino took a day off from work Friday after "clashing" at the White House with Bondi on Wednesday over their handling of the Epstein files, citing four sources familiar with the conflict. According to Axios, Bongino, who has previously promoted Epstein-related conspiracy theories, was frustrated with Bondi's management of the situation, particularly her earlier promises about releasing a "client list" that ultimately did not materialize.

Ken Dilanian of NBC News posted on X, "Bongino is out of control furious. This destroyed his career. He's threatening to quit and torch Pam unless she's fired."
In February, Bondi fueled speculation about such a list being "on her desk right now" when announcing the release of records related to Epstein's case. But much of what the government later distributed had been in the public domain for years.
Axios and CNN reported that Bongino was blamed for oversight about the "missing minute" in the Epstein video. He was also asked about a NewsNation article published Wednesday claiming that he and Patel had pushed for the earlier release of Epstein-related information but were blocked. Bongino denied being the source of that claim.
The news outlets said White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich, along with Patel, were in the room during their interaction.
"Pam said her piece. Dan said his piece. It didn't end on friendly terms," one person briefed on the heated discussion told Axios, which also reported that, "Bongino left angry" on Wednesday.
Conservatives have taken to social media to largely back Bongino in the apparent fallout with Bondi.
When Did Jeffrey Epstein Die?
Jeffrey Epstein died on August 10, 2019, in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City. The New York City medical examiner ruled his death a suicide by hanging. Epstein's death occurred while he was awaiting trial on federal charges of sex trafficking minors. His death led to widespread speculation and conspiracy theories due to the high-profile nature of his case and associations.
What is the Conspiracy Involving Jeffrey Epstein's Death?
Following Epstein's death, numerous conspiracy theories emerged, suggesting he was murdered to prevent him from implicating powerful individuals. Factors fueling these theories included the malfunctioning of security cameras outside his cell, the absence of a cellmate at the time of his death, and the failure of guards to perform regular checks. Despite these anomalies, official investigations by the FBI and the Department of Justice concluded that Epstein died by suicide, with no evidence supporting foul play.
Does Jeffrey Epstein's Client List Exist?
The existence of a "client list" detailing individuals involved in Epstein's alleged activities has been a topic of speculation. However, a joint review by the Department of Justice and the FBI found no evidence that such a list exists. The FBI and DOJ's conclusion has sparked criticism from members of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
What People Are Saying
Far-right media personality, Laura Loomer, posted on X on Friday, "@FBIDirectorKash and @dbongino are LIVID with @AGPamBondi over her DOJ Memo and the lack of transparency from her office regarding the Jeffery Epstein files. Source tells me Dan Bongino is taking the day off today from his job as Deputy Director of the FBI, and there's now speculation on whether or not he will return to his job at the @FBI over his disgust with Blondi's lack of transparency and handling of the Epstein files. Pam Blondi has brought total embarrassment to President Trump, @JDVance ,@dbongino and @Kash_Patel."
Her lengthy post continued, "She has also LIED to the American people. I'm told Kash and Bongino are furious with Blondi and the blowback she has caused them with her lack of transparency. Kash Patel and Dan Bongino should call for Blondi's public resignation today to save themselves and to also push for full transparency into the Epstein files. This is an issue the American people care deeply about. Someone needs to be fired for this. Giving Blondi courtesy to resign is more than she deserves. Trump should just FIRE her."
During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, a reporter questioned Bondi about Epstein. As she began to reply, Trump interrupted and said: "Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein? This guy's been talked about for years. You're asking—we have Texas. We have this. We have all of the things. And are people still talking about this guy, this creep?
"Do you wanna waste the time," he continued, adding: "I mean I can't believe you're asking a question on Epstein at a time like this, where we're having some of the greatest success and also tragedy with what happened in Texas. It just seems like a desecration."
Conservative commentator Glenn Beck said in a video posted to X, "But America can't lose Dan Bongino. He has SO MUCH CREDIBILITY. Everybody knows him, loves him. Pam Bondi has created so much DOUBT and CHAOS in this whole thing...either it's a MASSIVE COVER-UP or she's just FOULED IT UP...PLEASE, let's NOT LOSE DAN BONGINO...FIRE Pam Bondi and KEEP DAN BONGINO, please!"
What Happens Next
The DOJ and FBI determined that "no further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted" regarding Epstein. Backlash to this decision prevails.

It is a mystery that obsesses our time.
Jeffrey Epstein, one of the richest and most well-connected men in America, walked into prison. He was friends and a business associate of some of the most powerful people in the world - Presidents, Prime Ministers, Princes, politicians, business tycoons - the very top of the 1 class.
He also ran a sexual trafficking network of young girls and women.
Just over a month later, he was found dead in his cell.
The official response? Immediately declare it suicide.
Many people around the world, did not believe it. So in the last four-and-a-half years, while there has been a great deal of rumor, speculation, theorizing and fantasy - there has been a distinct lack of proper investigation.
I an Investigation Program students of one of the finest academic institutions for the study of crime - the University of New Haven - have been examining the case. We have read thousands of pages of documents and interviewed people with real, first-hand knowledge about the case.
This is the story of Jeffrey Epstein’s death. This episode is an interview with one of the lawyers who met him just days before he died. And like most people close to Jeffrey Epstein - he does not think he committed suicide.
He thinks it was murder.

Death
Main article: Death of Jeffrey Epstein
At the time of his death, Epstein was being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, awaiting trial for sex trafficking.
On July 23, 2019, Epstein was found injured and semiconscious at 1:30 a.m. on the floor of his cell, with marks around his neck. His cellmate, former New York City police officer Nicholas Tartaglione, who was at the time awaiting trial for four counts of murder, was questioned about Epstein's condition. He denied having any knowledge of what happened. Correctional staff suspected attempted suicide, but did not rule out the possibility that it was staged or that he was assaulted by another inmate. According to NBC News, two sources said that Epstein might have tried to hang himself, a third said the injuries were not serious and could have been staged, and a fourth source said that an assault by his cellmate had not been ruled out. After that incident, he was placed on suicide watch. Six days later, on July 29, 2019, Epstein was taken off suicide watch and placed in a special housing unit with another inmate.[312] Epstein's close associates said he was in "good spirits".
When Epstein was placed in the special housing unit, the jail informed the Justice Department that he would have a cellmate, and that a guard would look into the cell every thirty minutes. These procedures were not followed on the night of his death. On August 9, 2019, Epstein's cellmate was transferred out, but no one took his place.[319] Later in the evening, contrary to the jail's normal procedure, Epstein was not checked every thirty minutes.[317][312][318] The two guards who were assigned to check his jail unit that night fell asleep and did not check on him for about three hours; the guards falsified related records.[312][320] Two cameras in front of Epstein's cell also malfunctioned that night.[17]
Epstein was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City at 6:30 a.m. EDT on August 10, 2019.[321][322] The Bureau of Prisons said lifesaving measures were initiated immediately upon the discovery of Epstein's body. Emergency responders were called and he was taken to a hospital. On August 10, 2019, the Bureau of Prisons and U.S. Attorney General William Barr called the death an apparent suicide, although no final determination had been made.[14] The United States Department of Justice's Inspector General's investigation report released on June 27, 2023, criticized jail officials for repeated "negligence, misconduct, and outright job performance failures" in connection with Epstein's incarceration and death. It also denied the suggestion that what happened was anything other than a suicide.[323] In May 2025, the FBI announced plans to release surveillance footage from the night of Jeffrey Epstein's death, aiming to address ongoing conspiracy theories. Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that the video clearly shows Epstein alone in his cell, with no evidence of outside involvement, reaffirming the official ruling of suicide.[18]
Autopsy
Epstein's body moved from New York hospital to medical examiner's office.
On August 11, 2019, an autopsy was performed.[324] It appeared likely that Epstein had thrown himself violently off the cell's top bunk, which would explain the damage he suffered, other than strangulation.[325] The preliminary result of the autopsy found that Epstein sustained multiple breaks in his neck bones. Among the bones broken in Epstein's neck was the hyoid bone. Such breaks of the hyoid bone can occur from those who hang themselves from some substantial height, e.g. jumping from a chair into the rope, but they are more common in victims of homicide by strangulation. A 2010 study found broken hyoids in twenty-five percent of cases of hangings. A larger study conducted from 2010 to 2016 found hyoid damage in just 16 of 264, or six percent, of cases of hangings. Hyoid bone breaks become more common with age, as the bones become more brittle.[326] Forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht noted that hanging by leaning forward would not result in broken cervical bones.[327]
On August 16, 2019, Barbara Sampson, the New York City medical examiner, ruled Epstein's death a suicide by hanging.[328] The medical examiner, according to Epstein's defense counsel, only saw nine minutes of footage from one security camera to help her arrive at her conclusion.[16] Epstein's defense lawyers were not satisfied with the conclusion of the medical examiner and were conducting their own independent investigation into the cause of Epstein's death, including taking legal action, if necessary, to view the pivotal camera footage near his cell during the night of his death.[329] Epstein's lawyers said that the evidence concerning Epstein's death was "far more consistent" with murder than suicide.[16] Michael Baden, an independent pathologist hired by the Epstein estate, observed the autopsy. In October 2019, Baden said that Epstein had experienced a number of injuries—among them a broken bone in his neck—that "are extremely unusual in suicidal hangings and could occur much more commonly in homicidal strangulation". Baden stated that he thinks that the evidence points to homicide rather than suicide.[330]

Steve Bannon Stares Down Elon Musk with Plan for Jeffrey Epstein List

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said a special prosecutor should be appointed to investigate the Jeffrey Epstein client list, only days after Elon Musk accused him of being on it.
“Bundle everything together you’ve got -- sealed and unsealed -- and release it all," Bannon said during his "War Room" podcast on Thursday, The Hill reported. “Or, which I called for yesterday, appoint a special prosecutor -- [Trump] should appoint a special prosecutor, a special counsel now for the 2020 election and everything after that.

"Include Russiagate and all this," he continued. "You have to do that. That should be done immediately.”
Bannon said, if federal agencies can't get the job done, it's time to bring in someone who can.
Bannon's suggestion comes after Musk accused him of being on the client list earlier this week.
Longtime GOP operative Roger Stone was criticizing Bannon, asking: "Why would Bannon meet with Jeffrey Epstein both at his New York home and in Paris after Epstein was convicted on sex crimes in Florida? Why would he coach Epstein for his 60 minutes appearance?"
To which Musk replied: "Bannon is in the Epstein files."
Bannon's comments also come on the heels of the Department of Justice -- and Federal Bureau of Investigation -- telling the public that Epstein committed suicide and that there is no client list to be had.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Deputy Director Dan Bongino have all faced criticism for what appears to be a total about-face.

MAGA world in disarray over handling of Epstein case
Some have proffered the theory that the list is so convoluted, it would be impossible to immediately tell who may have committed crimes and who was simply in Epstein's orbit or met with him for different reasons.
There's also been speculation that donors, or people of prominence in D.C., are on the list making the administration weary of releasing such content.
The main issue with appointing a special prosecutor is that it doesn't guarantee results. The investigation can veer off into political posturing, as the attorney who is appointed becomes the center of attention.
And if Washington, D.C., is hellbent on keeping these things a secret, major aspects will likely remain hidden long into the future.
Election irregularities, the persecution of Trump, and Epstein all seem to have been pushed to the back burner for now.
But the public deserves answers, and they will continue to push on these issues until the truth is finally revealed.
