The old cinema
***
In the world of modern grace,
I long for a familiar place,
Where long ago, the old big screen
Gave us stories yet unseen.
That world calls me with its light,
I recall in spring;s delight,
My charming classmate would say,
“Come with me, let’s watch today.”
Forty years have slipped away,
In the balcony, last row, we’d stay.
As the evening dimmed like dreams,
The lamps faded like soft gleams.
And the piano off-screen played,
With the sound, our hearts were swayed,
Painting scenes in black and white,
With the credits glowing bright.
(припев)
Black-and-white film on the screen,
Red-and-white wine in a dream.
The projector;s light fills the room,
Crackling through the shadows and gloom.
In the script, carefree and bright,
Life seemed endless, pure delight.
I was happy, and you were too,
Forty years ago, just me and you.
(третий куплет)
We walked home with drinks in hand,
Sipping Riesling, feeling grand.
Every time, we’d laugh and cheer,
Remembering Chaplin’s genius near.
Discussing curtains and waitresses’ flair,
Parting always led to dreams we’d share.
Looking forward to the next show,
In that cinema’s warm glow.
(припев)
Black-and-white film on the screen,
Red-and-white wine in a dream.
The projector;s light fills the room,
Crackling through the shadows and gloom.
In the script, carefree and bright,
Life seemed endless, pure delight.
I was happy, and you were too,
Forty years ago, just me and you.
(последний куплет)
Many winters, summers passed,
With joys and sorrows unsurpassed.
So many hopes, meetings lost,
With each disappointment, we’d count the cost.
Yet one meeting lingers, etched in time,
That night when I returned, so sublime,
Through the window as the stars began to shine,
After leaving the movies, all felt divine.
