Born in 1926 in Morciano di Romagna, Italy, Pomodoro initially worked as a goldsmith and studied stage design before moving to Milan in 1954.

His breakthrough came in 1966 when he created his first "Sphere Within Sphere" sculpture for the Montreal Expo, a design that would later be installed in major locations worldwide, including the Vatican Museums, the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and Trinity College Dublin.
