Слагая мысли на чужую речь,
В их содержании надобно внимание, —
Чтоб, в переводе сокращая расстояния,
Не исказив их, на главу не кликать меч.

Но передать намерения, желания,
Переживания, почтение, тонкий смысл —
Принять или отвергнуть ожидания,
Не оскудив и не украсив вашу мысль.

Быть пунктуальным к каждой букве или знаку,
Чтоб настроение исходное задать,
И приструнить своим посланием забияку,
И, соболезнуя, печаль свою подать.

Быть точным на словах оригинала,
И, отдавая иностранцу уважение,
И не утратив чести изначально, —
Держать в объятиях или в напряжении.

Чтоб ведал он, что равный, не толмач —
Пред ним хозяин мыслей, речи, слова,
Что на родном своём и с языка чужого
Владеешь мыслью — как её ни спрячь.

When shaping thoughts through someone else's voice,
One must with care discern their deep intention —
To bridge the gap, condense, but leave no choice
For error, nor provoke misapprehension.

To share desire, respect, or heart’s unease,
To carry nuance, grief, or admiration —
Accept or challenge hopes, yet never tease
Or twist the soul beneath the information.

Be punctual to every mark and letter,
To set the tone as it was first conveyed,
Restrain the brash, console the ones who fetter,
Let sorrow speak, but not through masquerade.

Be faithful to the original's own grace,
Show honor to the foreign tongue you're framing;
Let not the truth of source lose face —
Hold close its pulse, its warmth, its quiet flaming.

So they may know — no servant stands before —
But one who owns the thought, the word, the fire,
Who speaks both native and translated lore
With grasp of meaning none can truly mire.
