Love Never Faileth

From intimacy with thee,
My face became covered with purulent sores —
'tis true…
And they that saw me turned away, in loathing.
Yet what is this, beside the wounds
That thou hast dealt to Love herself?

      Love is no feeling,
      Much less one of the five senses…

            My whole being was rent apart,
            As though bereft of life.
            An endless cold did fill my heart,
            And only the merciful Lord was nigh.

            Perchance so too did Adam die,
            Having unlawfully tasted of the Tree,
            And was cast forth from Paradise,
            And dissolved, instead of Light, poison within himself.

      A day passed as a thousand years,
      And a thousand years passed as a day.

Tormented, holy —
Love remaineth.
Love never faileth,
And though she shineth as she did before —
She shall touch thee nevermore…
Never again shall she touch thee.

      This is graven upon the Heavens;
      Divided by a bound unknown to thee;
      Crowned in Eternity.
