Мне ль в пору царства тьмы
Презреть борьбы желанье
И в опасениях тюрьмы
Примерить лик молчанья?
Стать Брутом для себя:
Предать обеты дум;
Душой младой кипя,
Быть зрителем с трибун?
Какой же дикий вздор!
Поэту ли по нраву
Иметь такую славу?
Она его позор!
Как гордый сын свобод
Булат письма умерит?
Будь проклят его род,
Коль он предать посмеет
Полёт идей благих
На радости злодея!
Коль пламень рвений стих
В груди сего пигмея:
Да будет проклят он,
Что дар имея свыше -
Предался труса нише
И славен как Мармон!
Клянусь, во цвете лет
И подле эпилога,
О, други, мой завет
Свободе верен строго!
Едва ли век страстей
Смутил рассудка ясность;
Услышьте свист бичей:
Их свист, и их напрасность!
Едва ли промолчит
И сгинет безразлично,
Нет, молвит он публично
Сей истинный пиит!
Вставай народ,
Вставай же гражданин:
Не бойся эшафот
И скрежет гильотин!
Рождается раздор
Обманами тирана:
Мучитель, жадный вор,
Отчизны нашей рана!
Случится час суда -
За всё заплатит Кромвель!
Народу будет вдоволь
Отмщения пора!
