A Dream

Tonight, I saw a dream so bright,
And in my dream he came at night.
He said to me:
— “You’re so divine,
My life with you feels dreamlike, fine!

I fear it all could slip away,
I fear my words could bring dismay,
I fear to wake and see you change—
Will you be near, or far, estranged?”

He spoke with passion, soft and deep,
And promised love he’d always keep.
His tear-filled eyes began to glisten,
While trembling strings of voice, I listened.

Confessions poured; his heart laid bare,
I heard the soul within his prayer.
He met my gaze, his words would flow:
— “And you, my love, just breathe and glow!

Forever I’ll be by your side,
And you will be my dear bride.
I’ll guard the flame of your soul—
Just breathe, my love, you make me whole!

Breathe like a babe’s first breathe take,
Breathe like the calm that follows quake,
Breathe deeply, love, and feel it through,
My soul exists because of you.

Life without you has no true aim,
For if I lost you, none remains—
No purpose, soul, no ‘me’ survives.
It’s you who gives my essence life.”

The dream dissolved in soft embrace,
Awake, I saw his loving face.
He whispered close; his voice so sweet:
— “Rest now, my love,
In dreams let’s meet.”
