choose a name

Choose a name.
Newborns cannot –
but you are no newborn.

You fell
into my hands,
small, but
mature,
uncertain, but
strangely luminous.

I am here to witness,
glad to greet you
in a world
where you may breathe,
where you may live
as you were never allowed.

I see you.
I welcome you.
I believe in you.

I will have no children.
But your presence –
your beginning –
means more than I dare confess.

So choose a name,
that I may call,
and you may answer.
