Yes, many can’t resist the influence that’s brought
To bear on them by an inventive thought –
That of Oblomovs, Rudins, Chatskys and such others.
The burdens fall on them!.. These bonds as well are wrought,
Yet are but mental and not heavy, as if brothers’…
An artist’s done a vivid cutout to see;
It’s nothing in itself and cannot truly be!
Yet, if a man is weak, without reservation
He picks the ripe fruits of an ill-matched gestation,
And there’s no place for his own greens –
It is as if a cobweb’s hampering all means
Of simple, unbroken and wholesome causation,
And on his mind ever denser is the dark
Of workings of a potent, someone else’s, spark…
