Снежная баллада - английская версия

Snowy ballad

This night, the old city could find no repose,
Pressed to earth, growing silent and dim.
Winter laid bare its primordial throes,
And a snowfall descended on him.

The north wind rose up in that troublesome night,
With a wail we have heard once before,
Unfolding colossal, invisible might,
Howling loud like ten chimeras’ roar.

Like that New Year magician with sacks full of spells,
Who rummages miracles at will,
He scattered a thousand wild storms from his wells—
Woe betide those whose doors stand unstill!

A sunlit Greek shivers in city walls’ cold,
An Eskimo’s chilled in his hut;
No traveler finds where the wheel tracks unfold,
And the sled dog, exhausted, is shut.

Snowfall. Wherever you wander or roam,
The gold-eyed sky of our earth,
Vast and unbounded, looks down from its dome
Where cloud-ships set sail since their birth.

And snowflakes? They flutter—so gentle, so free.
Tonight, there is no chance of sleep.
The old city dims every flicker we see,
So at dawn it may dazzle more deep.
