Eugene Onegin, A Word Before We Begin

I do not mean to rival Pushkin,
Nor claim his voice to be my own.
I only wish to walk beside him
Along a road so widely known.

The tale is his. The words may wander,
And cross another time and tongue;
Yet something living still remains —
Still restless, curious, and young.

So let us open up the pages,
And see what waits for us within.
No promises of perfect likeness.

Just listen.
Let Onegin's story begin.
