Мы все учились понемногу
Чему-нибудь и как-нибудь,
Так воспитаньем, слава богу,
У нас немудрено блеснуть.

Онегин был по мненью многих
(Судей решительных и строгих)
Ученый малый, но педант:

Имел он счастливый талант
Без принужденья в разговоре
Коснуться до всего слегка,

С ученым видом знатока
Хранить молчанье в важном споре
И возбуждать улыбку дам
Огнем нежданных эпиграмм.

Chaper I-V

We all have learned a little bit,
Of something, and somehow;
And so, thank God, with such an education,
It's not so hard for us to shine.

Onegin, in the eyes of many
(Determined judges, strict and stern),
Was learned enough, though pedantic;
He had the happy gift

Of touching lightly, without effort,
On almost anything in conversation,
And, with the knowing air of an expert,
Keeping silent in a serious debate,

While making ladies smile
With flashes of unexpected wit.
