Prodigal Son
in front of the museum, where
you never thought of taking me.
I’ll know you by a face of stone
so ancient and old, that I’ll feel
the need to hold you very tight
in an embrace that you and I,
after all, never gave each other.
And together we’ll lower our gaze
so as not to see the horror in our eyes
of time that’s passed all too quickly,
and finally think of something else.
Translation of Figliol prodigo by Gabriele Tinti
(inspired by Giorgio de Chirico’s 1922 painting The Prodigal Son)
