Donald Trump Jr. mused that the “Make America Great Again” movement has replaced the old guard of the Republican Party.

Trump Jr. hailed the recent leadership shakeup at the Republican National Committee backed by his father and argued that it illustrates the MAGA takeover.

“I think the RNC is gonna be a little bit more of that old-school establishment. That Republican Party frankly no longer exists outside of the D.C. Beltway. But it takes a little while to make that transition,” Trump Jr. said on Newsmax’s “The Balance.”

On Friday, the RNC voted to elevate former North Carolina GOP chairman Michael Whatley to succeed Ronna McDaniel as the party chief, daughter-in-law Lara Trump as co-chair, and senior campaign adviser Chris LaCivita as chief operating officer.
Trump Jr. stressed that the RNC needs to “focus on all the candidates,” not just his father.

“It’s not just about the presidency. We got a lot of members of Congress that have to win,” he said. “I think the biggest thing is we got to get faith back in that institution. People have to trust it.”

“Hopefully that’s what this does.”

The RNC has been beset by lackluster fundraising numbers. Last year, the organization took in $87.2 million and finished off 2023 with roughly $8 million cash on hand, per the Federal Election Commission.

Adjusted for inflation, that marks the RNC’s worst fundraising haul since 1993.

By contrast, the Democrat National Committee, pulled in $119 million and concluded the year with around $21 million cash on hand, according to the FEC.

Former President Donald Trump had previously backed former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel for that role after his 2016 election victory. She led the GOP’s efforts in Michigan, which went for Trump that year.

Trump Jr. also alluded to the exodus of anti-Trump Republicans from both chambers of Congress, including Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) who isn’t vying for reelection in the fall.

“People have to understand that America First, the MAGA movement is the new Republican Party. That is conservatism today,” Trump added. “You know, there may be the Mitt Romneys and the Liz Cheneys out there. But that is a rare and dying breed.”

Last week, after Trump walloped the competition on Super Tuesday, former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley suspended her campaign for the presidency.

With Haley out of the race, the 2024 election cycle has shifted to Trump’s expected rematch with President Biden.
