to be left out in the cold
The phrase "to be left out in the cold" means to be ignored, forgotten, or excluded from a group, activity, benefit, etc. The term originated in the late 19th century when it meant exclusion from a shelter or being left outdoors in cold weather. People soon transferred it to mean exclusion from other things such as information, a social group, and so on.
