take the cake
To take the cake is an idiom that means to be the most outstanding or extreme in some respect, either the best or the worst. The expression comes from a contest called a cakewalk, where the winner gets a cake as a prize. The idiom can be used to express annoyance, surprise, or admiration, depending on the context. For example, "He lied to me again, that really takes the cake!" or "She scored the highest on the test, she takes the cake!"
