Donald Trump's many critics have been hoping that his legal problems, which include four criminal indictments and a range of civil lawsuits, would derail his campaign. But poll after poll is showing Trump as the clear frontrunner in the 2024 GOP presidential primary. An Emerson College poll released on November 22 finds Trump leading former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley by 55 percent and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis by 56 percent.

Moreover, various polls are showing Trump with single-digit leads over incumbent President Joe Biden in a hypothetical matchup.
Conservative New York Times columnist Bret Stephens is among the Trump critics who was hoping that his legal problems would torpedo his 2024 campaign. But in a conversation with colleague Gail Collins, Stephens laments that Trump's campaign is growing stronger as his rhetoric and proposals grow more "awful."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
In the conversation, which the Times published in Q&A form on November 27, Stephens told Collins, "A year ago, Trump had been given up for dead, politically speaking, including — idiotically — by me. He has been indicted in multiple jurisdictions, on a variety of charges, some of them dubious — like the payoff to Stormy Daniels — but others very serious, like obstructing an investigation subpoena."

Stephens continued, "He's apologized for nothing, his rhetoric has become more awful and his message hasn't changed. Yet his dominance over the rest of the Republican presidential field keeps growing, and various polls have him beating Biden in a general election by anywhere from one point to six. That's some kind of dark political magic at work. To quote Taylor Swift: 'I'm shaking my head and, I'm locking the gates. This is why we can't have nice things, dar-ling.'"
