To cry wolf is an idiom that means to raise a false alarm or to lie about a danger. The expression comes from a fable by Aesop, in which a shepherd boy repeatedly tricks people into thinking that a wolf is attacking his sheep. The consequence of crying wolf is that people will stop believing you when you really need help.
