Conservative Scott Morefield, a one-time backer of former President Donald Trump who has now switched allegiances to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, issued a dire warning to Republicans about making Trump their nominee for a third time.
Writing on Twitter, Morefield pointed to Tuesday's election results as evidence that Trump and his hand-picked candidates such as failed Kentucky gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron would drag down the entire party in 2024.
"If Trump is on the ballot next year, the GOP is looking at a wipeout of epic proportions up and down the ballot," he argued. "Anyone remotely associated with him in non-blood-red states/districts (and even some red ones) will be fortunate to eek out a win."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Morefield went on to explain that voters' hatred of the twice-impeached, four-time indicted former president was so strong that it would override voter concerns about issues such as inflation.
"Republicans can’t win without moderates and independents, and his name is mud with them," he added. "Hatred for Trump nationally is much stronger than even peoples’ own economic self interest. Millions will vote against him and the candidates he endorses, even to their own detriment. Today is a harbinger of things to come if Republicans stay on this path."

'Another crushing defeat': Steve Bannon melts down after GOP election losses
Story by David Edwards •
Right-wing podcaster Steve Bannon lashed out at the Republican National Committee (RNC) on Wednesday after his party lost key races in Tuesday's elections.
The Republican losses included an abortion referendum in Ohio, the Kentucky governor's race, and the Virginia Senate. Bannon blamed the RNC for failing to convince Donald Trump's supporters to vote.
"The reality here, Trump delivers MAGA; MAGA delivers victories," Bannon griped on his Wednesday War Room program. "This was a turnout issue about MAGA, and the reason is the [Ron DeSantis adviser] Jeff Roes of the world and the billionaire donors, the billionaire donors with the hapless, feckless RNC failed to get our people out."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"Stand up and fight on the redistricting. Don't I want to hear the sob stories out of Virginia this morning," he continued. "Don't come here this morning and start whining about abortion. Stand up and do your job. Get in the trenches and fight."
"You a bunch of feckless hapless, and this super PACs and Jeff Roe delivers another crushing defeat, skimming 20%."
