If God is not absolutely just, he is not God, who is a maximally great being in any sense.
If God is not absolutely loving, he is not God as well.
If he forgives us without punishment He is not just.
So we should be punished, yet he loves us, so takes the punishment on HIMSELF.
That's the only possible scenario for a morally perfect God and depraved human to exist. The Justice and tyhe Love meet on the Cross.
